Nail Rehab: Week 1

I was really overwhelmed by the amount of interest in my Nail Rehab series and decided it would be best to do a weekly post while I go through rehabilitation.

Here's what my nails look like now, about two weeks after having my gels removed:

As you can see, my cuticles are heavily dried out from the removal process and there are file marks all over my nails.

You can see the ridges here and also just how thin and brittle they are. *Sad face*

From this angle, you can see the major ridge in my nail from where the gels were and where my nail has grown in. I'm about 1/4 of the way of having them grow out altogether and am getting anxious!

This week's regimen consists of two main aspects:

The first, as recommended by numerous bloggers and nail techs, is to constantly moisturize! Not just for the cuticles and skin, but also for the nails. The better moisturized they are, the healthier they are.

The second:

This came highly recommended to me by a friend of mine and I'll be applying it once a day for a week to see its effect. This is a nail hardener that is supposed to help toughen up nails and prevent them from breaking. We shall see!

What products would you like to see me test as part of Nail Rehab?

Birthday Floral Nails

Happy Hump Day! The week is halfway over... don't stress yourself too much!

Today's manicure is actually my birthday nails. I painted them late Wednesday night and am still wearing them. Seriously. I LOVE them!

I never had the confidence to try the shabby-chic floral look. But after seeing a manicure from The Crumpet, I changed my mind and took a stab at it. (Also, after failing miserable in trying to do a water marble featuring Cult Nails Time Traveler, which left my hands stained navy blue for a night after it went terribly wrong. Oops.)

Holiday Presents

Oh, hello again all of my lovelies! I have missed you so much!

Prior to Thanksgiving break, my professors at law school saddled us with enough assignments to bury me in my textbooks for two weeks. I have finally come out of case book hibernation and am so happy to be reunited with you all. The Halloween Hangover prizes are all on their way and things are getting back to normal!

Today, Princess Polish is getting in the holiday spirit with nails I rocked on Black Friday! I went back to the toy store I worked at for a little under two years (as my second job, Mets-aside) to help out on the super busy day. I am very well known for my crazy nail art amongst the customer base, so I HAD to go a little overboard for the day. And both Christmas and Chanukah are represented.

I went back into my It's So Easy drawer filled with their awesome products for nail art and pulled out their white Stripe Rite paint and rhinestones to create this simple and easy design.

Here are the Chanukah presents, represented by the blue and silver colors. I used Zoya Song (which is my new go-to blue) and Essie No Place Like Chrome. It took a little extra dexterity for the bows because I'm right-handed and this is my right hand.

If you can't do the loops, this will still look very pretty using the straight lines to make a t and the rhinestone at the center.

And here are the Christmas presents! I used Sally Hansen Insta Dry in Emerald Express and Zoya Elisa to get a nice metallic glow. For some reason, the "ribbon" on the ring finger yellowed after I put on my top coat, but it worked alright with the color scheme. I apologize for the raggedness of the middle finger near the cuticle... I got into a fight with a door. Though I win, this was the sacrifice!

So what do you think of this mani? If you try out this technique, be sure to let me know!

Falling Forward Nail Art Challenge: Day 4 - Back to School

Happy Football Sunday, everyone! It has been a crazy week in sports for this Jersey girl. My alma mater, Rutgers, smashed Arkansas yesterday to bring their record to 4-0! Mets starting knuckleball and CY Young candidate R.A. Dickey notched his 19th win of the season over the Miami Marlins in dramatic fashion. (Read: I was tearing my hair out as it got to 4-3 in the top of the 9th). And the Jets will be playing the Dolphins in a little over 30 minutes from the time I start this post.

Today, I'm bringing you Day 4 of the Nail Art challenge with a Back to School theme!

For those of you who have been following the blog from the early days of a crappy point and shoot camera, you may remember this mani. I've updated it slightly with a few new colors, but it's comparable. The biggest improvement in general is the picture quality!

For the locker (pinky), I used Revlon Silver Dollar, the Chalkboard (ring) features Sally Hansen Emerald Express, the ruler (middle) is Piggy Polish It's All About Blue, the books and apple feature NOPI Yellow... It's Me, and lastly is Sally Hansen White On with Funky Fingers black crackle. The detailing was all done with nail art paints (Stripe Rite and Art Club) and a striper brush.

So what do you all think? I'm dying to know!

Swatch and Review: R. Hobby Cosmetics

Happy Tuesday!

I have another indie brand on tap for today, R. Hobby Cosmetics!

Please note that while the bottles below are labeled Black Cat Lacquers, Rachel changed the name of her company to prevent confusion. All you need to know is that she is now making polishes under the name R. Hobby Cosmetics! :-)

Today, I have three lovely shades from R. Hobby... and I'm really excited to bring them to you!

Hump Day Holo: a-England Lady of the Lake and Sally Hansen Lapis Amethyst

Good morning, everyone! I'm bringing back Hump Day Holo with a special combination that I have come to adore!

I combined a-England Lady of the Lake with Sally Hansen Lapis Amethyst to create a stunning, funky purple French manicure that I'm in love with.

Check it out:

I LOVED this combination of the pearl duochrome that is SH Lapis Amethyst and the bright holo pop of a-England Lady of the Lake. This was actually pretty easy to accomplish too!

I apologize for the bubbles on my index finger... didn't realize my top coat had gotten to that point until it was too late!

Blurred sparkle shot!

So what do you think about this combo? Do you adore it as much as I do?

Swatch and Review: Sally Hansen Xtreme Wear Blue Me Away

If there's anything in life that I love, it's a beautiful spring blue. And that's exactly what I have to show you today!

Sally Hansen Xtreme Wear Blue Me Away is a gorgeous Robin's Egg Blue creme. It applied a little watery at first, but was pretty manageable and opaque in two coats. It was pretty shiny on its own, but Dazzle Dry's top coat made it pop that much more.

Removal on this was pretty easy too. I didn't find that it stained my nails or my skin, which is typical of many blues.

I also think that this color is going to be GREAT for nail art. I can already see myself using it as a nice background for flowers or rainbows. It just has a beautiful pop of color that is muted enough that I won't draw too much attention, but bright enough to make a statement.

Sally Hansen nail polishes, including this one, are available at most drug stores, including CVS, Rite Aid, and Walgreens, as well as many supermarkets and stores like Target and Walmart.

Happy Wednesday!

101 Dalmatians Theme Nails

Hi everyone! I hope you're having a wonderful start to your weekend!

Today is Rutgers Day at my university, a huge open house on all four campuses in which school organizations run various tables and events. There's music, food, and a lot of fun to be had.

I live on Cook Campus, the agricultural campus complete with a farm and greenhouse. It is also where we live with our puppies that are being trained as Seeing Eye dogs. Some of you may remember Pebbles, who came to live with my family and I this past Valentine's Day. For those of you who are new, here is what the seven week old, 7.2 pound Pebbles, a female black Labrador retriever, looked like on the day she arrived:

And here is Pebbles today:

It's a bird! It's a plane! It's SUPER PEBBLES! Pebbles turned four months old yesterday and weighed in at 22.5 lbs. She's still petite and small, but she has a really big personality!

So where does the 101 Dalmatians nail art come into play? Well, as the treasurer of the Rutgers Seeing Eye Puppy Club, Rutgers Day has been my event to run for the last two years. Because I'm graduating in two weeks, this will be my last event as a Rutgers undergraduate student. So instead of using our club colors (green and white) and simple paw prints, I wanted to do something really different.

And after checking out a Disney nail art contest (woo Amber!) for some inspiration that's how the 101 Dalmatians Manicure was born!

I used nail art polishes in red, gray, black, and white, as well as Revlon Gold Coin for the details and Sally Hansen Cherry Red, Sally Hansen White On, and NYC Water Street Blues for the base colors.

Here's a shot in which you can see the thumb in better focus. I used Dazzle Dry top coat, which I am currently obsessed with at the moment, and it tried very quickly. (Review of DD coming soon!)

This mani was a HIT at work today, so I'm very excited to see how all of the kids react tomorrow at Rutgers Day.

Hope you all have a great Saturday!

New York Sports Water Marble

It was a weekend full of water marbles for Princess Polish, having rocked the Relay for Life Water Marble Friday and Saturday and a new water marble Sunday and Monday.

It's no secret that I'm a huge fan of sports. I love it all. But my two biggest loves in life are the NY Knicks and the NY Mets, the latter of which I am fortunate enough to call my employer. So with the Knicks clinging tightly to a spot in the playoffs and the Mets off to the best April start since I was in high school, I thought it was time to break out the blue and orange.

Selecting the actual polishes to work with was much harder than you would think it'd be. The shades used by both teams are very similar and vivid. So I couldn't choose something too pastel in the orange family and it was difficult to find a blue that wasn't too light or too dark on the spectrum.

The orange was easier to select, since I only have a handful in my orange polish drawer. But the blue... well, it's the heaviest of the drawers. That should pretty much spell it out for you.

In the end, I went with Sally Hansen Xtreme Wear Blue It and Essence Wake Up (more on that shade a little later in the week).

I found out that blue and orange are hard colors to marble together because if you're not careful, they'll blend together to look brown. But I figured that out only one nail in and was super careful after that.

This is my right hand all marbled up. Unfortunately, I thought my left hand came out nicer, but managed to crack a nail shortly before I was ready to take a picture. The whole hand looks like my middle finger. So you're stuck with my right for now. Sorry, everyone. This was (Daniel?) Murphy's law at its best. (Mets fans will get that joke)

Now here is the ultimate problem: REMOVAL.

Essence Wake Up applied like butter and came off as easily as it should have. Sally Hansen Blue it made me want to cry. It stained my cuticles to the point I had to take a shower, use cuticle remover, and then soak my hands in warm water. And that was before I even tried to take the polish off. (Confession: I got a manicure so the nail tech had to do that for me. Bless her heart.)

While I love my Mets (Oh hey, David Wright!) and my Knicks (Oh, welcome to the party, old Carmelo Anthony. So nice of you to join us with 15 games left in the entire season.), I don't think I would ever do this again. It was too much of a headache to remove and clean up. I'll just stick to my good, old-fashioned Metsicure.

Although, if the Mets make it to the World Series, I'll double barrier with tape and Vaseline. May this be my problem come October.

Until tomorrow!

Easter Mani Day 2: Polka Dots + A Contest

Here is Part 2 of my Easter nails for the week. I'm trying to do a different color as a base each day. Yesterday was blue and today is green!

I apologize in advance for the photo not being of the same quality you're used to in recent months. My parents took my sister on Spring Break to DC (lucky her, mine was last month) and that means my dad's fancy DSLR camera went with him. Unfortunately, my purple and pink manis are still on the camera. Oops!

So here is the last one I did, using Revlon Minted:

It was actually much easier to do than the Gradient Dots. I did a first layer of different-sized dots in white. Then I used Revlon Sunshine Sparkle, Borghese Incantato Purple, Borghese Romanzo Pink, and a mixture of half Sally Hansen White On and half NYC Water Street Blue in slightly smaller dots over each white one for the outlined effect. It really didn't even take that long at all!

Hope you liked this one! And remember to email me your pictures of your Easter manicure before Friday at 8pm EST! Top 5 will be posted on Saturday and win prizes!

Happy St. Patrick's Day!

This water marble was done with Zoya Holly, Sally Hansen Green with Envy, and Funky Fingers Blitzen (hence the glitter). I wanted the effect to look like waves, as if green liquid was being poured into a glass. Mainly because I'll be working so no beer for me. Haha.

While I'm celebrating with a water marble mani and a ton of Sprite Zero with green food coloring, I hope you're all being careful out there! Drink responsibly and trust your instincts. And be sure to check in and let me know you survived St. Patrick's Day 2012. After all, there is a brand new Zoya Collection to look forward to and you wouldn't want to miss that!

Swatch and Review: Sally Hansen HD Byte

I had been reading that over at Rite Aid, a lot of polishes had been listed as 75% off. When I got to the one by school, I found a lot of them had been wiped from the shelves. BUT I managed to snag two Sally Hansen HD polishes for $1.55 each and I was very happy with that.

Originally, I noticed the polishes were wayyyyy too sheer to be on their own. But when I layered Byte, which looked like nothing more than a pretty pink polish, I was nearly knocked off my chair.

Holy guacamole, Byte is a duochrome!
Upon closer examination of the bottle, I noticed some blue microshimmer hiding amongst all that glitter.

Look at that color shift! Ahh, I LOVED it. The only downside was the noticeable tip wear after a day, but for such a gorgeous duochrome effect, I'll repaint if I have to!

You can purchase any of these HD shades by Sally Hansen at your local drug store, such as CVS, Walgreens, or Rite Aid.

So what do you think, ladies? Worth the $1.55?

And stay tuned for the first post of March Madness!

Read Across America Week: Rainbow Fish Nails

Hope you all are enjoying the new look of the blog! It took a lot of toying around with Photoshop, but I think I'm really happy with it.

For Read Across America Week (last week), I wanted to do a manicure inspired by one of my favorite books as a child: The Rainbow Fish by Marcus Pfister!

Instead of painting the actual fish, I wanted to draw inspiration from its beautiful scales. So I picked up Rimmel Marine Blue, Funky Fingers Baby Baby Baby, OPI DS Elegance, Zoya Indigo, and Sally Hansen Purple Potion... and got to work.

This was the end result and I wore it the entire weekend! It was time consuming, but relatively easy. I used a dotting tool to create a scale-like effect. I thought that using tips on four fingers and full coverage on the ring finger would add a nice accent to it. Unfortunately, it has been raining here for a week. But I managed to get the slightest hint of sunlight on Saturday.

And here are close up shots of the ring fingers. I blurred the last one so you could see all of the sparkly goodness in macro!

If you want to try out the scale effect with your own polishes and color combos, please post them to the Princess Polish Facebook page! I would LOVE to see how yours turned out!

Until tomorrow!

Gradient Tutorial

I have been dying to try a gradient for as long as I can remember. So as a reward for sitting through my three hour LSAT class, I decided to sit down to watch Project Runway and break out the nail polish. And I couldn't believe how easy it turned out to be, using just nail polish and a makeup sponge.

(From left to right: China Glaze Blue Iguana, Wet and Wild Sapphire Blue, Zoya Ibiza, Rimmel Midnight Blue, and Sally Hansen Black Diamond)

Here are the five polishes that I used. You can use less, or even more if you're ambitious, but it's up to you. These shades aren't mandatory at all, go with what you have. I found that these were a nice gradient of blue and even though Blue Iguana was substantially lighter than Sapphire Blue, I think it really made the manicure pop in the end. So take that under consideration.

Also, if you're thinking about using a black with some sparkle like I did, use one that is a true black that's not grainy. Black Diamond looks okay on the tips, but being nitpicky, I didn't really love the grainy look and feel of it in the end. It doesn't blend as well as another black. You may be better off using a black satin color and then adding a hint of glitter with a top coat at the end. But it's totally up to you!

Are you ready to become a gradient pro? Well, let's get started!

1) Tape your fingers. I can't tell you how much easier this would have made my life, considering how hard it is to get blue nail polish off without staining your skin. One pieces on each side of the nail and right below would make your manicure much cleaner looking. Take my word for it.

2) Apply two coats of your lightest blue.

3) Using your second blue, swipe a line of polish across the WHOLE tip of your makeup sponge and dab it twice on a nonporous surface (in my case, a paper bowl) to prevent uneven sponging.

IMPORTANT: Wait until your base polish is only slightly sticky to the touch before you start the sponging process or you'll create goopy bumps that will ruin your hard work. I promise, the extra wait is worth it.

4) Starting at the tip of the nail and using the whole width of the sponge so it curves around your nail, lightly dab the sponge down your nail, leaving a small amount of your base color at the bottom.

If you notice that the polish did not sponge well to the sides of your nail, repeat the sponging process using the corner of the sponge on those bare areas.

5) Repeat steps 4 and 5 for as many colors as you desire, EXCEPT your last color, lessening the length of the sponged area as you go.

Here is how the sponging looked after Zoya Ibiza and Rimmel Midnight Blue:

6) For your last color, apply the polish to the sponge as your did for the others. When you dab this time, do so until you barely see any polish on the plate/bowl. This will make the color much sheerer on the nail, but will look like a more even blend. This may require more than one repeat of sponging until you get a true dark tip (in my case, black), but it will look blended instead of just a painted tip.

Don't worry that your nails look spongy, that will be solved in the next step.

7) Now, remove your tape and apply a top coat! I use Seche Vite because I find it creates the smoothest surface, especially when using grainy glitter or sponging. Plus, it's dry time cannot be beat.

Here is the end product, with a little nail art flower:

Happy sponging!

DEAL ALERT: CVS

I traveled to CVS yesterday on my way home from class and wound up finding some GREAT nail polish bargains. Okay, so maybe I took a detour and somehow wound up in East Brunswick. Sue me.

Regardless, there are some awesome clearance deals going on at CVS right now, aside from the Sally Hansen BOGO 1/2 off sale and the Spend $10 get $4 ECB wyb any Revlon Cosmetics deal.

I found a TON of Sally Hansen polishes in the clearance area. Everything from Insta-Dry to Diamond Strength to Color Quick Nail Pens. All 75% off. Now, there was a coupon out a while ago for $.50 off any SH polish, so with the coupon, the polishes cost me a grand total of $18 instead of the retail of $106. MAJOR score in my book.

There are also some Borghese on sale for $7.99 and Orly for $6.29, but I don't think they're big enough bargains that I'm willing to splurge, no matter how much I'm lemming Borghese Stellar Notte. And that's a lot.

So I hope that you can have as good of a haul as I did at CVS. While you're there, make sure you sign up for the Beauty Bucks program so that you can get your 10% off cosmetics coupon that you can use that day, as well as the CVS Extra Care card if you don't already have one. Believe me, it pays off. Big time.

Happy Bargain Hunting!
