Swatch and Review: Hump Day Holo - HITS Mari Moon Cutie Pie

Happy Hump Day! Hump Day Holo has returned once again, but this time, we're going to holo-fy a color for you. It's a little throwback!

I'm bringing you HITS Mari Moon Cutie Pie, which is normally a blue-purple-magneta duochrome.

And with a little help from OPI DS Shimmer, I have turned into sparkly holo goodness!

Here, you can see the MAJOR POP the OPI DS Shimmer added to the color!

And even here, you can tell the shift in color.

 

This one, lastly, shows just how much duochrome the DS Shimmer pulled out. It's not nearly as much as the original polish, but it's still a gorgeous shift nonetheless!

Weekend Holo: Spring Stripes

You all may remember my post earlier in the week with my Spring Stripes nails. Well, for hump day holo (at least, this belated one), I wanted to see how I can kick it up a notch!

I LOVED it! Still girly, but delicate and yet it has the KAPOW I wanted!

So tell me, everyone... which look do you prefer? The original Spring Stripes or the holofied Spring Stripes?

Hump Day Holo: Zoya Mira

I've already gushed over how much I love Zoya Mira, but if you adore the purple creme as much as I do, you're going to die when you see it holo-fied.

A Belated Hump Day Holo: Deborah Lippmann Razzle Dazzle

Sorry for the delay, everyone! Between school and spring allergies finally knocking on my door, it has been a rough 36 hours. But never fear... the holo is here.

 

 This holo-fied color is Deborah Lippmann's Razzle Dazzle, a smooth cranberry jelly with fuschia glitter. Be on the lookout for a full review tomorrow. A coat of OPI DS Shimmer turns this shade into a linear bordeaux holo that is to die for!

Read Across America Week: Rainbow Fish Nails

Hope you all are enjoying the new look of the blog! It took a lot of toying around with Photoshop, but I think I'm really happy with it.

For Read Across America Week (last week), I wanted to do a manicure inspired by one of my favorite books as a child: The Rainbow Fish by Marcus Pfister!

Instead of painting the actual fish, I wanted to draw inspiration from its beautiful scales. So I picked up Rimmel Marine Blue, Funky Fingers Baby Baby Baby, OPI DS Elegance, Zoya Indigo, and Sally Hansen Purple Potion... and got to work.

This was the end result and I wore it the entire weekend! It was time consuming, but relatively easy. I used a dotting tool to create a scale-like effect. I thought that using tips on four fingers and full coverage on the ring finger would add a nice accent to it. Unfortunately, it has been raining here for a week. But I managed to get the slightest hint of sunlight on Saturday.

 

And here are close up shots of the ring fingers. I blurred the last one so you could see all of the sparkly goodness in macro!

Hump Day Holo: Zoya Holly

The second-ever Hump Day Holo honor goes to Zoya Holly, a gorgeous emerald green. I own many holos, but not a single rich green color. And what better way to showcase one of the options for the winner of the Zoya Go Braugh giveaway? So without further adieu, here is Holly + 1 coat of OPI DS Shimmer...

I'm on the fence about this one. I LOVE Holly so much and was thrilled to write about it in Day 13 of the ongoing 30 Days of Zoya Challenge/Giveaway. But I don't think this is as deep of a color as I would have liked, once I layered Shimmer over it. Perhaps I should have used a thicker coat? Or maybe Zoya Petra is just so showstopping, nothing can compare? I don't know. But it's not my favorite holo-fied shade.

So it's back to the drawing board for next week. What did YOU think about Holo Holly? What would you like to see for next week?

Day 25: Zoya Petra

When I received the Smoke and Mirrors collection, there were three polishes in there I figured only my roommate would wear. One of them was Petra. But when I saw the shade on her nails, I could not believe how deceiving the color looked in the bottle.

Petra is a dusky gray creme with heavy purple undertones. In fact, it's a pretty wearable color for me, especially considering she was going into my share pile. The funny thing is that in toying around with my recent discovery that layering OPI DS Shimmer over anything and everything makes great polishes even more amazing, I found out how to make Petra a total showstopper.

How drool-worthy is THAT?

OPI DS Shimmer

It is not exactly a surprise as to how much I LOVE the OPI Designer Series Collection. So when I saw all of them on clearance last winter at Harmons for $3.97, I snatched up every last one, all thirteen of them. In fact, I even have a duplicate for a very special reason when I hint 100 followers. HINT HINT: Get cracking on that, guys.

The most classic of all holos is silver because not only is it the first, it's often the best of a collection.

So today, I bring you OPI DS Shimmer…



The refraction of light in Shimmer is fantastic and you can clearly see the rainbow effect with one or two coats.

The application was excellent, nice and smooth. And per usual, the brush was fantastic. This was with two coats. I probably could have used a third, but in tomorrow's post, you'll see why I only used two.



This is with only one coat. I think this definitely has a chic, nearly nude-but-better look to it that is perfectly fashionable, as well. It can also be dainty, as you see here, since it's not as in-your-face as regular silver glitter, or you can jazz it up with some nail art, colored tips, or even marbling (hint hint: tomorrow) to make it a little wilder.

Regardless of how you wear it, DS Shimmer is definitely versatile and a must-have for any holo-lover.

Layering OPI Designer Series

Thanks for sticking with me during my infrequent posts. Only one more week of LSATs and then I'll be all yours again!

Today's post features one of my favorite layering combinations EVER.

As you know, I love blurple. And with this blue glitter? Forget it.

This is OPI DS Fantasy, a deep blue glitter with multichrome glitter. And as you can see below (credit: lunatikitty.blogspot.com), it's a really pretty color. But it's missing a wow factor for me.



Same goes for OPI DS Royal (credit: all-you-desire.com), which takes numerous coats to build up and isn't a duochrome either.



But when I layered one coat of Royal over one coat of Fantasy...



Amazing. A beautiful grape color with vivid royal blue shimmer that blows most other purple glitters out of the water.

Now, it's still not a duochrome, but it has much more of a wow factor than Fantasy or Royal on their own.

OPI Designer Series: Glamour

As I mentioned in my introduction, I'm a glitter junkie. If a nail polish has sparkles, I'm interested. Although, I'm particular about my glitters.

But there is one kind of nail polish I'm never particular about: duochromes.

For those of you who have never heard of duochromes, or aren't exactly sure what qualifies as one, I would define a duochrome polish as one in which the color changes hue when viewed at an angle and as they move towards or away from a light source.

The OPI Designer Series are famous for its wide range of these polishes, with a few non-DCs sprinkled in like Fantasy and Magic.

However, I stumbled upon DS Glamour while at a friend's house this past week. She had picked it up a while back and forgotten all about it until cleaning out her dresser, leaving it out to show me.

So OF COURSE, I volunteered to try it out. Fair warning, by the time I took pictures, it was two days later and the slightest hint of tip wear is showing. My apologies.



As you can see, DS Glamour is royal blue with a slight purple tint that is INCREDIBLY prismatic. And boy, is it a stunner.



Here, you can really see all of its facets under artificial light. As I took this tonight, sunlight was not available to me. However, I will post a good sunlight shot tomorrow.

Either way, I'll totally wear this again. That is... if I can pry it out of my friend's hands.
